Rhodes holidays from the UK: a practical guide
Where to stay on Rhodes, when to go and what to see, from the medieval old town to Lindos.
Rhodes is one of the sunniest islands in Greece, with history on every corner, long beaches and a good choice of all-inclusive hotels. It is easy to reach from the UK and has a long season.
Getting there
Direct flights to Rhodes (RHO) leave from many UK airports and take around four hours. The airport is on the north-west coast, so most resorts are within an hour's drive.
Greece is two hours ahead of the UK.
Where to stay
- Faliraki: the liveliest resort, with a long sandy beach, water park and nightlife.
- Kolymbia: quieter, with a long beach and several large all-inclusive hotels. A good base for Lindos and the east coast.
- Lindos: a white village below an ancient acropolis, with small beaches. It is beautiful and busy by day.
- Ialyssos and the west coast: close to the airport and Rhodes Town, with pebble beaches. It is often windy, which suits windsurfers.
- Rhodes Town: for the old town, restaurants and a city feel.
When to go
- May, June, September and October: warm and sunny, with fewer crowds and usually better prices.
- July and August: hot and the busiest time, with the highest prices during UK school holidays.
- November to April: mild, but many beach hotels close for the winter.
Things to do
- Rhodes Old Town: one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe, with the Palace of the Grand Master and the Street of the Knights.
- The acropolis of Lindos, with views over the bays below.
- Beaches such as Tsambika, Anthony Quinn Bay and Prasonisi in the far south, where two seas meet.
- A boat trip to Symi, a small island with a colourful harbour.
Money and practical tips
- The currency is the euro.
- Check the latest entry rules for Greece and the EU before you travel, including how long your passport must be valid.
- Many all-inclusive hotels charge for some drinks, à la carte restaurants or sun loungers on the beach. Check what is included.
- Take travel insurance that covers your activities.
Getting a good deal
Prices are highest in late July and August. Late May, June and September often offer the same weather for less.
